Unfortunately last Sunday afternoon somebody left the door open... is the title of Part of a collaborative project between a Museum of Contemporary in the Netherlands (Het Domein Museum Sittaard), a Dutch postgraduate center for artists, designers and theorists (Jan van Eyck Academie) and a center of contemporary art from Eastern Europe (KSA:K Center for Contemporary Art, Chisinau Moldova). The project, which consisted of an exhibition at Het Domein as well as a two-volume publication investigating the history of art institutions in the contemporary world, and across the West/East geopolitical and cultural borders. Part one of the project was called Unfortunately last Sunday afternoon somebody left the door open... as it dealt with the history of a Dutch art academy (JvE Maasctricht) and how it has evolved from a Catholic art school to becoming a late twentieth century center or radical art, theory and design and the Moldovan center KSA:K which was the product of the post-Berlin Wall modernization efforts carried out by American corporations and NGOs The second part of the project entitled And Knut’s mountain bike has been stolen… dealt with the history of the Het Domein Museum in Sittard, and the transition of this institution from a photography museum to becoming one of the leading contemporary art museums in the south of the Netherlands. The exhibition at Het Domain and the publications invited artists associated with these institutions in the Netherlands and Moldova, as well as artifacts and material found in the archives of these three institutions.
